Seen from the heights of Lookout Mountain, the Tennessee River loops through the valley near Chattanooga, a view that drew travelers and artists alike in the decades after the Civil War. The mountain's ridges had also been a strategic prize, and Union forces took the slopes in November 1863 in a fight often called the "Battle Above the Clouds" because of the mist that hung over the heights. By the time such views were widely printed, the river's bends and the surrounding ridges had come to stand for both the natural beauty and the wartime history of the region. Look closely at the river's path and the land around it, which explain why this spot became a favorite stop for sightseers.
