Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1871 was a river and railroad town still recovering from the Civil War. Its position on the Tennessee River, where the Western & Atlantic and the Memphis & Charleston lines met, made it a shipping and rail junction, and the battles of 1863 on nearby Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge had left scars on the surrounding ground. Residents were rebuilding through the Reconstruction years, with new commerce in cotton, lumber, and iron drawing workers and merchants to the young city. The town's mix of railroad depots, warehouses, churches, and modest frame houses, all set against the ridges that had shaped its war, gave people a sense of a place that was growing quickly and still reckoning with its recent past.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Chattanooga, Tennessee, drawn in 1871. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
