Few mountains in the South carried as much meaning in the 1880s as Lookout Mountain, the ridge rising above Chattanooga along the Tennessee-Georgia line. This color print, issued by the Krebs Litho Co. of Cincinnati and entered for copyright in 1883, belongs to a wave of scenic views that introduced the mountain's cliffs and valleys to a national audience. Its fame rested partly on the Battle of Lookout Mountain in November 1863, fought in clouds and mist that gave the engagement its nickname, "the Battle Above the Clouds." Chromolithographs like this one, built from many stones each inked in a separate color, were prized for making distant places feel near.
