Rock City is a commercial attraction atop Lookout Mountain, straddling the Georgia and Tennessee line near Chattanooga, and its name points to the bouldered ridge and narrow stone passages that visitors wind through. The rock formations, some of which were given names like the Fat Man's Squeeze, drew tourists to the mountain from the early twentieth century onward, when the site was developed as a visitor destination. Its best-known feature today is the view from the summit, which reaches across several states on clear days. Rock City became widely known through the barn roof signs painted across the South urging travelers to see it, a roadside advertising campaign that outlasted many of its contemporaries.
