Few early tobacco cards were built like the Mecca Double Folders, which fold so that two ballplayers share one card. Issued in 1911 by the American Tobacco Company and packed with its Mecca cigarettes, the set combined halftone and relief printing in color to give the portraits a sharp, bright finish. Collectors value the T201 series both for its folding design and for what it shows about how tobacco companies used baseball to sell their products. This example comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, which preserves many cards from the period.
