This triple-folding card is one of the Hassan issues, a tobacco set from 1912 printed in color by relief and halftone methods. Its center photograph carries the caption "Just before the battle," a phrase that frames the image as a pregame or game-day moment rather than a play in progress. American Tobacco Company inserted cards like this into cigarette packages, where they stiffened the packs and gave buyers a reason to collect. The folding design let one card show several players or scenes at once, which is why the set is still valued by collectors and researchers of early baseball. This example comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection at the Library of Congress.
