A college glee club and Herbert Hoover share the title of this glass negative, dated April 8, 1929, though the school's name is cut off and the title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which has not been verified. Hoover had taken office as president only weeks earlier, in early March 1929, so the sitting falls in the first months of his administration, when the White House drew steady press attention. The National Photo Company was a Washington news photography firm, and its large-format negatives were made for reproduction in newspapers and magazines. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition in negatives of this age.
