Herbert Hoover appears here with the Harvard Glee Club, a detail that sets this glass negative apart from the many other portraits of the 31st president on this board. Hoover, a Stanford-trained engineer who had served as Secretary of Commerce, was sworn in as president in March 1929, so this April 1929 session falls within his first weeks in office. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and events in that era, made the negative, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
