Taken at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1929, this picture shows Herbert Hoover a few months into his presidency. May 30 was the traditional date for Memorial Day observances at the time, when presidents often visited the cemetery to honor the nation's war dead. The photograph is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded public life in the capital, and its title comes from data written on the negative sleeve, so the occasion is worth confirming. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of its original coatings, a common sign of age.
