Hoover's visit to Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1929, the day observed as Memorial Day, is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from the other Herbert Hoover pictures in the collection. Hoover had taken office as president only a few weeks earlier, in March 1929, and a presidential appearance at the cemetery on the holiday was a familiar ceremonial role for a new chief executive. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public life in the capital for decades, made the negative, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from age-related deterioration of the original coating.
