Herbert Hoover's visit to Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1929, is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from other Hoover pictures in the collection. Memorial Day fell on May 30 that year, and presidents traditionally marked the holiday at Arlington, where the nation buries its military dead. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented federal life and public ceremonies in the early twentieth century, made the image, and its negative still carries the studio's own handwritten title. Note the surface streaks and blemishes, which come from age and deterioration in the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
