Most pictures on this board show Herbert Hoover in formal settings, but this glass negative places him at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1929, the day the nation set aside for honoring its war dead, which had been known as Decoration Day before it became Memorial Day. Hoover had been inaugurated as the 31st president only a few months earlier, in March of that year, so the visit came early in his term. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public life in the capital for decades, made the negative, and its glass plates remain valuable records of the period. Note that the title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified, and the surface streaks and blemishes are signs of age in the original coating.
