Herbert Hoover took office as president in March 1929, and this glass negative captures him receiving a gavel on April 26 of that year, an early public moment of his administration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, events and daily life in the capital, made the exposure, and the record notes that the title came from information the studio wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so the caption is not independently verified. Glass plates of this kind were the standard working medium for press and studio photographers of the period, and the image shows the formal ceremonial exchanges that filled the early months of a new presidency.
