This glass negative captures President Herbert Hoover in a November 8, 1929, encounter with the Boston Export Club, a group tied to overseas trade. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose press pictures documented Washington and public life in the early twentieth century, made the image. It was taken only weeks after the stock market crash of late October 1929, when the economy was turning sharply downward and foreign trade was a growing concern. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
