Dated to 1929, the year Herbert Hoover took office as president, this glass negative records Hoover alongside a group whose name, as written on the negative sleeve, points to a national export commission. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented government officials and public life in the early twentieth century, made many images of this kind, with formal poses and carefully staged settings. The negative was a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its streaks and blemishes come from the natural deterioration of the original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when examining its surface.
