Herbert Hoover appears with pilots from the General Tire & Rubber Company in this view dated August 20, 1929, only months into his presidency, which began in March of that year. Company-sponsored flying teams were common during the late 1920s aviation boom, when tire and rubber firms backed pilots to promote air travel and their own products. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public events of the period. The glass negative shows streaks and other blemishes from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
