This glass negative documents the office of Herbert Hoover after a fire, dated December 26, 1929, about nine months into his presidency, which began in March of that year. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that recorded city life and officials in the 1920s and 1930s, made the image, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. The title comes from data written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes are visible because the glass coatings have deteriorated naturally over time.
