This photograph shows Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, leaving Washington in 1923 after a meeting with President Calvin Coolidge, and the caption says they were on their way to receive a formal notification. Hoover was Secretary of Commerce at the time, a post he held from 1921 to 1928, and he was becoming one of the most visible figures in the Republican administration. The picture came from Underwood & Underwood, a New York agency that supplied many press photographs of Washington officials in the 1920s. The subject tag for whistle-stop campaigning reflects the train travel that politicians of the period relied on to reach voters.
