Jefferson Square, a park in San Francisco's Western Addition, became a refuge for families left homeless when the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of the city. The park is named for Thomas Jefferson, though the scene shows no one in particular, only the tents and makeshift shelters that filled open public grounds as relief camps. The view was issued by the Pillsbury Picture Co., and its old caption card files it under refugees and disasters. Those catalog notes are not fully verified, so the picture is best read as a general record of how the city's residents lived in the weeks after the disaster.
