From across the Tidal Basin, the white dome of the Jefferson Memorial rises behind a screen of flowering cherry trees. Japan gave the trees to Washington in 1912, and the memorial, designed by John Russell Pope, was dedicated in 1943 on Jefferson's 200th birthday, during World War II. A view from about 1944 shows the capital's landscape at a time when the building was still new and the spring blossoms drew crowds to the water's edge. Worth noticing is how the still basin mirrors both the trees and the classical colonnade, softening the building's formal lines.
