The print shows Thomas Jefferson's 1776 proposal for the Great Seal of the United States, with both faces of the design laid out side by side. His obverse drew on the Anglo-Saxon chiefs Hengist and Horsa, and his reverse showed the Israelites led through the Red Sea, ideas meant to cast the new nation as a free people escaping tyranny. Congress did not adopt his design, and the seal was finished in 1782 in a different form. An 1856 engraving revisiting his scheme shows how strongly later Americans associated Jefferson with the nation's founding symbols.
