This color lithograph presents Thomas Jefferson, the third president, and was published by H. Robinson in both New York and Washington, D.C., probably between 1840 and 1851. By then Jefferson had been dead for more than two decades, and his reputation as author of the Declaration of Independence and founder of the University of Virginia had made him a favorite subject for commemorative portraits. Lithography, which allowed printmakers to produce inexpensive, colored images in quantity, was then widely used to bring such likenesses into American homes and schools.
