Few portraits of Thomas Jefferson circulated as widely in his early presidency as this stipple engraving, which reproduces a painting by Rembrandt Peale. Peale painted Jefferson from life in 1800, the year before he took office, and the print was issued in Philadelphia by the publisher A. Day, probably around 1801. Stipple engraving builds its tones from dots rather than lines, which suited the soft modeling of Peale's face and made a fine likeness available to buyers beyond the wealthy few who could commission a portrait.
