Herbert Hoover and Charles G. Dawes appear together in this November 5, 1929 record, eight months into Hoover's presidency. Dawes had served as vice president under Calvin Coolidge and shared the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the Dawes Plan, which eased Germany's postwar reparations payments. The glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose plates document much of the capital's public life in that period. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
