Steve Mopope's watercolor of a Kiowa wedding ceremony is one of the more intimate scenes in a body of work that otherwise leans toward ceremonial and dance subjects. Mopope, a Kiowa painter from Oklahoma, was one of the artists who worked with Oscar Brousse Jacobson, the Oklahoma art professor who encouraged Kiowa and Caddo painters in the 1920s and helped bring their watercolors to wider attention. This color plate was reproduced in Jacobson's 1929 book of Kiowa watercolors, published in Nice, France, and it was later cited in a Library of Congress resource guide on Native peoples. The picture gives a rare view of courtship and marriage customs in the Kiowa community during that decade.
