The panorama looks out over successive ridges of the Blue Ridge, with a bare tree in the foreground framing the valleys beyond. Its mountains belong to the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor, a scenic road built in the 1930s and 1940s to link Shenandoah National Park with Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The bare branches suggest a winter or early spring scene, a season when the layered ridgelines are easiest to read. Views like this one helped draw visitors to the parkway, which was designed to show off the landscape rather than cut straight through it.
