The Ridge is less a photograph than a working map, with small pen-and-ink vignettes sketched into the margins and along the route of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway itself was conceived in the 1930s as a scenic road linking Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee, and it was built over several decades as a New Deal-era project. Pictorial maps like this one were a popular way to promote such roads, presenting the drive as a continuous series of views, overlooks and mountain farms. Look closely at the small scenes to see what travelers were meant to notice along the way.
