Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader born around 1771, appears in this color lithograph, printed at I.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838. Portraits of Native leaders circulated widely in the 1830s, when Eastern audiences followed the debate over Indian removal closely. Ridge was among the Cherokee who signed the 1835 Treaty of New Echota, which ceded the nation's eastern lands, and he was killed in 1839 after the forced move west.
