A hand-colored lithograph of John Ridge, a Cherokee writer and leader, shows a Cherokee man presented to an eastern audience during a turbulent period for his nation. Ridge, born in 1803, spent the late 1830s traveling and speaking in Northern cities as the Cherokee were pressed to give up their homelands in the Southeast. The print was drawn, printed and colored at I.T. Bowen's lithographic shop in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838, which shows how portraits of Native people circulated as commercial prints. Ridge was killed in 1839 in Indian Territory by Cherokee opponents of the removal treaty he had helped sign.
