Here a canoe carrying Native American travelers is the focus, and the title, "The Great Explorers," puts those figures at the center of a story usually told from the European explorer's side. Frederic Remington, best known for his paintings and illustrations of the American West, made this scene into a painting that was then reproduced as a color halftone, a process that let publishers print artwork in books and magazines in large numbers during the 1890s and 1900s. The print shows how popular illustrated periodicals carried images of frontier life and Native subjects to a wide middle-class audience, and it is worth noticing how the subject of travel by water is treated as a theme in its own right.
