Few views on the Blue Ridge Parkway are as quiet as this one, where autumn foliage doubles itself in the still water of a river. The parkway was begun in 1935 as a scenic route linking Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina, and it was designed so that drivers would move through the landscape rather than past it. Stretches like this one, where the river slows and the trees turn color, show why the road's builders chose such a route. The mirror-smooth surface is worth lingering over, since it reveals the full range of reds and golds that the ridges are known for each fall.
