Casimir Funk, the Polish-born biochemist, appears here in an ink drawing over graphite dated around 1927, with the pencil underdrawing still visible beneath the firmer inked lines. Funk is remembered for coining the word "vitamine" in 1912, a blend of "vital" and "amine," later shortened to "vitamin" as scientists learned that not all of these compounds contained amines. Drawn during the 1920s, when portrait sketches of scientists and public figures were common in print, the work shows how an artist could build a likeness quickly and then sharpen the features with confident strokes.
