Williamsburg, Virginia, served as the capital of the colony from 1699 until the government moved to Richmond in 1780, and the record gives this print's date only as circa 1740. By that time the town was laid out along Duke of Gloucester Street, linking the Capitol at one end with the Governor's Palace at the other, and the College of William & Mary stood nearby. The record does not name the maker or the exact view, so the print is best read as a glimpse of a planned colonial town at a moment when it was the political center of Virginia.
