Curtis titled this one "Moving," and it shows a line of Crow riders and pack horses crossing a stream below cliffs in Montana. The image was made around 1908 and appeared in volume 4 of Edward S. Curtis's *The North American Indian*, the multivolume survey he published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. Curtis's pictures of Plains and Plateau peoples often staged traditional life as he imagined it, but scenes of travel like this one capture a practical reality: households relocating with their horses and belongings. Look closely at the loaded packs and the way the animals pick their way through the water.
