Named for the Union ironclad *Monitor*, this sheet music cover celebrates a warship that had become famous only weeks before it was printed. In March 1862 the *Monitor* fought the Confederate ironclad *Virginia* at Hampton Roads, Virginia, in the first battle between ironclad warships, and the engagement drew wide attention in the North. The Philadelphia firm of Lee and Walker issued the march, and the color lithograph is credited to T. Sinclair. Its date of about 1862 shows how quickly publishers turned wartime news into popular printed music.
