Edward S. Curtis made this c1905 portrait of Young Hairy Wolf, a member of the Apsaroke, the name by which the Crow people were then often recorded. Curtis photographed many Plains and Plateau subjects in full ceremonial regalia for his multi-volume work *The North American Indian*, and the record's subject headings point to clothing and headdresses as the focus here. The sitter's dress, and the care Curtis took to document it, make this an example of the portrait series that shaped popular images of Native nations in the early twentieth century, and it is worth reading closely alongside the Crow regalia it records.
