Here Herbert Hoover appears with a group of spelling bee winners, a reminder that presidents of this era often greeted young achievers in public settings. Hoover had taken office only weeks earlier, in March 1929, so this May encounter comes early in his term. The picture was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and visitors across the period. It survives as a glass negative, and the streaks and blemishes visible on it come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
