Winchendon, Massachusetts, in 1922 was a mill town in north-central Massachusetts that had earned the nickname "Toy Town" for its long-standing toy manufacturing. The community had grown up around its waterpower along the Millers River, and by the early twentieth century several factories there produced wooden and metal toys, including the Converse toy works and the Russell and Morrill shops, which shipped goods across the country. Railroad service connected the town to larger markets, and workers' lives revolved around the mills, churches, and the village centers that clustered near the factory yards. A panoramic view from this period would have shown a community whose fortunes rose and fell with the toy trade and the seasonal demand of holiday buying.
