Mr. Pickwick, the comic hero of Dickens's *The Pickwick Papers*, stands alone in this color lithograph, drawn by Kyd, the pen name of illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke. Dickens published the novel in monthly installments beginning in 1836, and its round-spectacled retired gentleman, who sets out to see the world, became one of Victorian fiction's best-loved figures. Raphael Tuck & Sons issued the print in London around 1899 as part of a series on Dickens's characters, and its bright coloring suits a man known for his good nature.
