Titled simply "Lager bier," this color lithograph was printed around 1879 by Mensing & Stecher, and the record tentatively credits a designer named J. Z. Wood. By the 1870s, lager had become the dominant style of beer in the United States, largely because German immigrants brought their brewing traditions with them. Breweries, saloons and beer distributors relied on bright prints like this one to advertise their products, so the piece reflects both the growth of the lager trade and the commercial art that accompanied it.
