The title, "Centennial Bock Bier: The best can be had here," ties this 1876 Currier & Ives lithograph to the nation's centennial year, when Philadelphia hosted a large world's fair marking 100 years since the Declaration of Independence. Bock, a strong lager traditionally brewed in winter and spring, was associated with the German immigrant brewers who had built a large American beer industry by the 1870s. Currier & Ives produced such prints in large numbers for a broad middle-class market, so the piece shows how commercial advertising and patriotic celebration could overlap in the period.
