Few beer advertisements of the late 1870s lean on goats as heavily as this lithograph does, a nod to bock beer, whose name is popularly linked to the German word for goat. The print promotes the bock brewed by H. Clausen & Son at its brewery on 47th Street and Second Avenue in New York City. Wittemann Bros., a New York lithography firm on William Street, produced it around 1879, the year the brewers registered its copyright. The caption also names G.W. & C.R. Miller as sole agents in Boston, which shows how a New York brewer reached buyers in other cities.
