A "3 Shots 5 cents" sign in the window and a Lemp beer sign over the swinging door set this St. Louis saloon apart from the many barrooms of its day. The Lemp Brewery, founded by Johann Adam Lemp in the 1840s, was one of the city's largest, and its name appeared on countless taverns. The picture is dated roughly 1890 to 1933, a span that runs through national Prohibition, which closed saloons like this one from 1920 until 1933.
