Most of the picture is taken up by the grand saloon of the Drew, a palace steamer, one of the luxury river and lake boats that carried passengers in the later 19th century. These vessels were built to impress, with long public rooms, gilded and carved woodwork, and heavy fittings meant to rival hotel lobbies. Passengers used such saloons for dining, socializing and, on many boats, the bar service that this gallery's wine, beer and spirits category points to. The room shows how a steamboat tried to offer the comforts of a city hotel while traveling on the water.
