Its catalog subjects point to grapes and the wine trade, which places this cognac firm's advertisement within the vineyard rather than the bar. Leonetto Cappiello, an Italian-born artist who settled in Paris and became one of the leading names in French commercial poster design, created the image for the Gautier Frères house. The color lithograph was printed by P. Vercasson & Cie. on Rue de Lancry in Paris, a firm that produced many artistic posters of the Belle Époque. The record dates it to roughly 1907 to 1909, when lithographed posters were shifting from plain text toward bold images meant to catch the eye of people walking city streets.
