The title, "Uncle Sam's pet pups! Or, Mother Bank's last refuge," casts the Bank of the United States as a mother seeking shelter, a joke that drew on the bitter fight over the national bank. Andrew Jackson vetoed its recharter in 1832 and moved federal deposits into state banks, and the Panic of 1837 made the institution's troubles a political issue. Printed in 1840, a presidential election year, the sheet ties Jackson and William Henry Harrison to that dispute and shows how partisan prints used the bank question to attack Democrats. Its woodcut and letterpress format, colored by hand, was typical of inexpensive campaign prints sold to voters.
