The polar bear is what sets this color lithograph apart: its title promises beer "fresh and cold, direct from the North Pole." Printed in Baltimore around 1877 by A. Hoen & Co. for the publisher F. Klemm, it belongs to the wave of colorful lithographs that brewers and dealers used to advertise their drinks in the 1870s. Baltimore had a large German-American brewing community then, and the Hoen firm was among the city's notable color printers, so the piece reflects both local commerce and the playful exaggeration typical of period advertising. Its focus on cold beer points to a selling point that mattered long before reliable home refrigeration.
