Mr. Stiggins is the red-nosed, hypocritical preacher of Dickens's *The Pickwick Papers* (1836–1837), a man who sermonizes against drink while quietly indulging in it, which makes him a fitting figure for this wine, beer, and spirits board. This color lithograph comes from a Raphael Tuck & Sons series of Dickens characters, issued in London around 1899 and drawn from original watercolors by "Kyd," the pen name of illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke. The series was a popular way to bring Dickens's cast to Victorian and Edwardian households, and Stiggins's exaggerated features show how Kyd turned the novel's satire into a recognizable portrait.
