Glen White stars in this color lithograph for Gem's *Absinthe*, a dramatic film whose title names the notorious green liqueur at its center. The poster, dated around 1913, was printed by the U.S. Lithograph Company, and the Universal trademark in the lower left corner marks its studio. In the 1910s, absinthe was widely blamed for drunkenness and ruin, and the drink was banned in several countries, so a film built around it drew on real public anxiety about alcohol. The poster's subject tags on alcoholism show how such films framed drinking as a moral cautionary tale.
