Few labels promise as much as this one: Dew Drop Bitters billed itself as "The Great American Stomach Regulator," a claim that places it firmly among the patent medicines of the nineteenth century. Bitters like this were sold as digestive tonics, but many were heavily alcoholic and sweetened, and their therapeutic claims went largely unchecked until federal food and drug laws began to tighten in the early 1900s. The label is worth reading closely for its wording, which shows how medicine, liquor and salesmanship were often sold together.
